Icarus' dream

Festo - SmartBird

"SmartBird is an ultralight but powerful flight model with excellent aerodynamic qualities and extreme agility. With SmartBird, Festo has succeeded in deciphering the flight of birds - one of the oldest dreams of humankind."

"This bionic technology-bearer, which is inspired by the herring gull, can start, fly and land autonomously -- with no additional drive mechanism. Its wings not only beat up and down, but also twist at specific angles. This is made possible by an active articulated torsional drive unit, which in combination with a complex control system attains an unprecedented level of efficiency in flight operation. Festo has thus succeeded for the first time in creating an energy-efficient technical adaptation of this model from nature."

Yes 3D can be Analogic: Mr Beam

Mr Beam
"Two projectors create a real-life skinning effect on a simple, white living room.
We created a unique physical 3D video mapping experience by turning a white living room into a spacious 360° projection area."

"This technique allowed us to take control of all colors, patterns and textures of the furniture, wallpapers and carpet. All done with 2 projectors."

Lego Antikythera Mechanism

"Two thousand years ago, a Greek mechanic set out to build a machine that would model the workings of the known Universe.
The result was a complex clockwork mechanism that displayed the motions of the Sun, Moon and planets on precisely marked dials.
By turning a handle, the creator could watch his tiny celestial bodies trace their undulating paths through the sky.
The mechanic’s name is now lost..."   Jo Marchant

2000-year-old computer recreated

A working model of an ancient computer was recently recreated in London.

Virtual model of the (still) mysterious Antikythera Mechanism by Mogi Vicentini based on the theoretical and mechanical model by Michael Wright.

Antikythera Mechanism Part 2: by Nature Vide

New interpretations of the Antikythera Mechanism reveal that it could be used to predict eclipses, and that it had a dial recording the dates of the ancient Olympiads. The 2,000-year-old box of intricate gearwork provides a glimpse of the engineering prowess of the Hellenic world. The team discuss their results here.

Behind the Scenes: Lego Antikythera Mechanism
Andrew Carol rebuilt a 2000-year-old analog computer out of Legos. It predicts the year, date, and time of future solar and lunar eclipses accurately to within two hours. All using plastic gears. This film explains how it works.

"...One of our first conversations about stop-motion was what software we were going to use.
We new for a fact that we needed something stable and something that would control our camera.
One of our classmates kept talking about Dragon Stop Motion.
He would say stuff like, “It’s the only program you will ever need… you idiots!” He was right (about the software)"
"For the shooting we used a Canon XS..."

The world's smallest stop-motion animation character

"Professor Fletcher's invention of the CellScope, which is a Nokia device with a microscope attachment, was the inspiration for a teeny-tiny film created by Sumo Science at Aardman.
It stars a 9mm girl called Dot as she struggles through a microscopic world.
All the minuscule detail was shot using CellScope technology and a Nokia N8, with its 12 megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss optics." >nokia (YouTube)
