A milestone in 3D printing

Here comes the copyright infringement question concerning 3D printed objects. As 3D printers are getting much less expensive, one can expect a soon to be time when a certain number of objects will be home made. Of course, objects can be designed with a 3D software, but a shortcut would be to scan the original piece and simply copy it.

But we can expect finding online specialised sites which will offer, free of charge or for a small amount, ready to print 3D files. This new market will probably bring up the same problems we are witnessing with music and video downloading:
As soon as some smart ass will create an equivalent to DivX/ MP3 compression standard, 3D files will be easy to get and millions of artefacts, originally designed and produced by industries, are going to be scanned, available and shared online.

While the already obsolete war on piracy is on, it seems that no one has yet anticipated the forecoming problem, as well as the complete market revolution that will occur. Cheers!

The Penrose triangle, also known as the Penrose tribar, is an impossible object. It was first created by the Swedish artist Oscar Reutersvärd in 1934. The mathematician Roger Penrose independently devised and popularised it in the 1950s, describing it as "impossibility in its purest form". It is featured prominently in the works of artist M. C. Escher, whose earlier depictions of impossible objects partly inspired it.

The tribar appears to be a solid object, made of three straight beams of square cross-section which meet pairwise at right angles at the vertices of the triangle they form.

Differences in brain metabolism measured in brain death and the vegetative state, compared with healthy subjects. Patients in brain death show an ‘empty-skull sign’, clearly different from what is seen in vegetative patients, in whom brain metabolism is massively and globally decreased (to 40-50% of normal values) but not absent. Images from an fMRI machine showed that when the patient was asked a specific question and told to respond in a specific way, the same areas of his brain lit up as in a healthy person.

Technology Review: Touchless 3-D Fingerprinting

A new non-contact, 3-D fingerprinting system could make spotting the bad guys faster and easier, whether it's at the border or the police precinct. By projecting patterns of light onto a finger and analyzing the image, researchers from the University of Kentucky are able to create a more accurate print than those made with ink or sensor plates. The researchers say the system is more efficient than traditional fingerprinting and significantly reduces the number of incorrect matches.

"Fingerprinting has been widely applied to identify criminals in forensic law enforcement and security applications," says Yongchang Wang, a PhD candidate at the University of Kentucky, and lead author of a paper on the fingerprinting research. But traditional techniques, Wang says, don't make it easy to gather accurate, detailed prints.

Even the modern approach, in which the subject's finger is rolled over a glass plate for scanning, often requires several attempts per finger to get a usable print. The glass also must be cleaned after each scan. And capturing prints of all 10 fingers can take several minutes.

"The customs agent has a budget of 32 seconds per person. They need a way to get your fingerprints quickly," says Mike Troy, chief executive officer of FlashScan3D, a company based in Richardson, TX, that was founded to commercialize the Kentucky system.

The device works by projecting a series of striped lines onto a finger, in a process called structured light illumination (SLI). A 1.4 megapixel camera automatically captures images of the lines as they wrap around the finger, at roughly 1,000 pixels per inch. That's twice as much as the resolution required for a fingerprint in the FBI's Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). By analyzing the way each line rises and falls, the software builds a 3-D model of the surface of the finger in less than a second, with each ridge and valley in its proper place. And unlike existing fingerprinting devices, the SLI system isn't hampered by oily skin or a dry environment.

Un scanner de grande dimension

Si d'un côté les scanners 3D sont devenus accessibles (env. 2 à 3000 euros) à tous, ceux de grandes dimensions interviennent maintenant là où auparavant seule existait la photogrammétrie.
Il faudra bien sûr que les moyens de restitutions 3D suivent.
Nous assistons là à une évolution annonçant la fin prochaine des techniques traditionnelles du moulage.
Cependant comme les techniques anciennes ( moulage, pantographie, photogrammétrie)
le scanning de surface ne permet pas d'accéder aux volumes intérieurs ( les contre-dépouilles, retenus, rétreints, réserves).
Pour celà, des moyens existent (scanner médical et tomographie) qui viendront probablement apporter leurs solutions.
