Blender is the free open source 3D content creation suite, available for all major operating systems under the GNU General Public License.
It can be used for modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, water simulations, skinning, animating, rendering, particle, and other simulations, non-linear editing, compositing, and creating interactive 3D applications, including games.

You can create 2D and 3D shapes such as lines, rectangles, circles, boxes and cylinders, and combine them to make models of 3D objects such as houses. You can color and texture your 3D models and publish them so that other users can see them.

Houdini is a high-end 3D animation package developed by Side Effects Software which headquartered in Toronto, Canada. Its chief distinction from other packages is that it has been designed as a purely procedural environment. A version of the product, called Houdini Apprentice, is available as a free download for non-commercial use.

Google SketchUp 7 is software that you can use to create 3D models of anything you like. Build models and add them to Google Earth

DAZ 3D has everything you need to create amazing 3D art and animation, including free 3D software, 3D models, 3D acessoires, 3D environments and more...

Wikipedia/AutoDesk

Autodesk® Maya® 3D modeling, animation, rendering, and visual effects software offers artists an end-to-end creative workflow. Autodesk Maya 2010 software is the first release to unify the Autodesk® Maya® Complete 2009 and Autodesk® Maya® Unlimited 2009 feature sets, advanced matchmoving capabilities, and high dynamic range compositing into a single affordable package*. Also included for a complete CG workflow are 5 additional mental ray® for Maya batch** rendering nodes and the Autodesk® Backburner™† network render queue manager

LightWave® is a complete modeling, rendering and animation system. Used extensively in broadcast television production, film visual effects, video game development, print graphics and visualization, LightWave is responsible for more artists winning Emmy Awards than any other 3D application.

Cinema 4D is a modeling, animation and rendering package developed by MAXON Computer GmbH of Friedrichsdorf, Germany. It is noted for its flexible interface and ease of use and it is capable of procedural and polygonal/subd modeling, animating, lighting, texturing and rendering.

Poser / Wikipedia is a 3D rendering and animation software program optimized for models that depict the human figure in three-dimensional form, mostly used to pose and animate the figures in a similar way as a mannequin. The program has become very popular due to its ease of use, which allows beginners to produce basic animations and digital images, and the extensive availability of third-party digital models.

ZBrush is a digital sculpting tool that combines 3D/2.5D modeling, texturing and painting. It uses a proprietary "pixol" technology (see below) which stores lighting, color, material, and depth information for all objects on the screen. The main difference between ZBrush and more traditional modeling packages is that it is more akin to sculpting.

Mudbox is a 3D sculpting tool, akin to Zbrush. Currently developed by Autodesk, Mudbox was created by Skymatter, founded by former artists of Weta Digital, where it was first used to produce the 2005 Peter Jackson remake of King Kong. With a simplified interface to allow for a more intuitive experience, Mudbox's primary application is high-res digital sculpting, displacement and normal map creation, though it's also used as a design tool.

RealFlow RealFlow is a ground-breaking, state-of-the-art fluids and dynamics simulation tool, developed by Next Limit Technologies for the simulation of fluids, water surfaces, rigid bodies, soft bodies and fibres. The elements of the simulation use physical properties to control their behavior and can interact with each other and react according to impulses, forces and accelerations.

Massive is the premier simulation and visualization solution system for generating and visualizing realistic crowd behaviors and autonomous agent driven animation for a variety of industries, including film, games, television, architecture, transportation, engineering, and robotics. Using Massive, an animator, engineer or robot developer designs characters with a set of actions and reactions to what is going on around them.

Wikipedia / SolidWorks is a 3D mechanical CAD (computer-aided design) program that runs on Microsoft Windows and was developed by Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp., a subsidiary of Dassault Systèmes, S. A. (Vélizy, France). SolidWorks is currently used by over 3/4 million engineers and designers at more than 80,000 companies worldwide.
